Seminar on Poverty Reduction and Modernization Development for Nigeria Held in China

From May 19th to June 1st 2026, the Seminar on Poverty Reduction and Modernization Development for Nigeria, organized by the International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC), was successfully held in Beijing and Weifang, Shandong Province. The seminar brought together 29 officials from Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other government departments and agencies. Ms. Jie Ping, Deputy Director General of IPRCC, attended and delivered speeches at both the opening and closing ceremonies. Ms. Maryilyn Iya Ogbebor, Director of the Intergraid Consulting Company in Nigeria and Mr. Abraham Agogo, Strategic Advisor to the the Board of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, spoke on behalf of the participants during the opening and closing ceremonies, respectively.

With the theme of “Poverty Reduction and Modernization Development,” the seminar featured thematic lectures and cultural experience activities in Beijing, followed by field visits to Weifang in Shandong Province. Participants observed projects related to industrial development, the integration of agriculture, culture, and tourism, agricultural modernization, and rural development and governance.

Participant representative Mr. Abraham Agogo stated that the seminar enabled the participants to gain a deeper understanding of China's remarkable achievements in poverty reduction and provided new ideas and inspiration for Nigeria's development. Through both lectures and field visits, they witnessed firsthand China's accomplishments in areas such as agricultural innovation, urban and rural development, and grassroots governance. He remarked, “If China can do it, we can do it too.” He noted that China's development success has been built on long term planning, strong implementation, and sustained investment. Upon returning home, participants will draw on the knowledge and insights gained during the seminar, actively promote exchanges of experience and practical cooperation, and contribute to Nigeria's economic and social development.
