Indonesia aims to eliminate extreme poverty by 2026

The Indonesian government is optimistic that its efforts to reduce extreme poverty will be successful and that the number of people living in such conditions will be eliminated by 2026 at the latest, an official said on Wednesday.

Achmad Maulani, special staff to the Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, said that President Prabowo Subianto has shown a strong commitment to eradicating extreme poverty, which currently affects 3.17 million people, by issuing two presidential instructions on the matter in the first half of 2025.

"Extreme poverty will be finished in 2026 because we have calculated that 3.17 million can be finished," he said at the Bisnis Indonesia Forum on Poverty Alleviation through Community Empowerment Based on Sociopreneurship.

Achmad noted that there are at least three policy strategies to eradicate extreme poverty. First, reducing the burden of community expenditure. Second, increasing community income. Third, reducing the number of pockets of poverty.
