The Young African Media People Trip, co-hosted by the International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC), the Department of African Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of International Cooperation of the National Radio and Television Administration, was held in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province, from August 16-19, 2024. Fourteen young African representatives from twelve countries, including Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Sierra Leone, the Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Burundi, Mali, and Tanzania visited Shibadong Village of Huayuan County and Changputang Village of Fenghuang County, two of the fifty China Poverty Alleviation Exchange Bases. Ms. Li Xin, Deputy Director General of IPRCC, and Mr. Zhang Caidao, Second-class Inspector of Hunan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, participated in the whole event.

While in Huayuan County, the participants visited the Exhibition Hall of Targeted Poverty Alleviation, the Miao Embroidery Rural Revitalization Demonstration Base and Targeted Poverty Square at Shibadong Village, to learn about village’s experiences in eliminating poverty with the guidance of targeted poverty alleviation and moving on to achieve rural revitalization. They also visited the local tea industrial base and animal husbandry and breeding base. While in Fenghuang County, the participants visited the fruit industrial base and demonstration park in Changputang Village, to learn about the developments of agricultural technology and agritourism, and how the industry had benefited local farmers.

The event is acclaimed by all the participants, who agree that China and Africa enjoy broad space for cooperation on poverty reduction and development, and that African countries can learn from China’s experience in poverty reduction and rural revitalization. They hope that they can participate in other similar activities so as to learn more about the experiences of China’s poverty eradication, tell the story of China-Africa poverty reduction cooperation together with their Chinese counterparts, and finally to contribute to the cause of poverty reduction across Africa and around the world.
