Chairman Liu Jian Headed a Delegation to Australia and Fiji

Visit Housing Poverty Alleviation Project in Navo Residential Area

From October 18 to 25, 2010, a delegation headed by IPRCC Chairman Liu Jian paid a study visit to Australia and Fiji to learn about the situation of social assistance and poverty reduction in the two countries.

 

In Melbourne University 

During the study trip, the delegation visited the relevant departments and agencies of the two countries including the University of Melbourne in Australia and the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Reduction of Fiji. In Fiji, the delegation conducted a field trip to the housing poverty alleviation project in Navo Residential Area, the handicraft poverty alleviation project and sewing center in Lautoka, the women’s center in Raibevu and other project sites, and held talks respectively with Dr. Stephen Chandler, Research Advisor of the University of Melbourne on international cooperation and Deputy Director of Australia-China Water Resources Research Center, Professor Mr.Ray Ison, Monash University of Austrilia, Ms. Hon. Jiko Luveni, Fiji Minister of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Reduction and Mr. Govind Sami, Executive Secretary-General of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Reduction of Fiji. In addition, Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Mr. Han Zhiqiang held a banquet in honor of the delegation during their stay in the country.

The delegation introduced China’s practice, remarkable achievements in poverty reduction, IPRCC’s mission and major activities in detail. At the meantime, they learned about the progress made by Australia and Fiji in the fields of socioeconomic development, poverty reduction and social assistance. Furthermore, the delegation also had in-depth discussions with attendants over strengthening poverty reduction exchanges and cooperation. The relevant departments of Australia and Fiji expressed their keen interest in further cooperation.
