Financial Crisis and Poverty Reduction: A Study on China's Economic Stimulus Package and its Poverty Impact

Eliminating poverty is the primary objective of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Since 2000, the international community has reached a consensus on achieving MDGs by 2015. However, with the outbreak of financial crisis in 2008, MDGs faces a huge challenge. According to the statistics provided by the World Bank, the number of absolute poor with a daily consumption below US$1.25 will increase by 89 million by the end of 2010. At the meantime, the poverty reduction undertaking in China has been challenged. In order to understand the impact of financial crisis and further provide the Chinese government with policy advice. International Poverty Reduction Centre in China conducted a research project on "Financial Crisis and Poverty Reduction: A Study on China's Economic Stimulus Package and its Poverty Impact", under the support and guidance of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development of China, with financial support from UNDP.
